F1 approves shorter grand prix distances for 2027

F1 has approved shorter grands prix for 2027, with the standard race distance dropping from 305km to 290km — cutting most events by two or three laps. The decision came at the F1 Commission's third meeting of 2026 in London, chaired by Nikolas Tombazis and Stefano Domenicali.

Why it matters:

The shorter races are a direct response to revisions of F1's new-generation power units. With the internal combustion engine taking on a greater share of output next year, fuel consumption will rise. Cutting race distance accommodates that increase without forcing constructors to redesign chassis for larger fuel cells — a costly commitment just one year into the new regulations.

The details:

• Standard race distance falls from 305km to 290km, trimming two to three laps from most races. Monaco already runs outside the norm at roughly 260km.
• Power unit revisions: ICE output rises to 420kW; the MGU-K is capped at 300kW in normal running but retains 350kW in overtake mode.
• The changes ease energy-management concerns that emerged under the 2026 regulations.
• Other changes: The two-hour racing maximum remains, but the three-hour event window disappears. Race control works to a fixed finishing point, with daylight determining when track activity must end.
• Officials gain more flexibility to extend free practice after disruption; gearbox homologation is removed for 2027.

What's next:

The reduction currently applies only to 2027. In 2028, ICE output is expected to reach 450kW and fuel flow will rise further as the combustion/electrical balance moves toward 60/40 — so F1 will revisit race lengths. All changes remain subject to FIA World Motor Sport Council approval on October 15.
