Why Monaco F1 appeal ruling could take weeks
The FIA’s International Court of Appeal has heard arguments in the Pierre Gasly Monaco podium case, but a ruling may not come for weeks. The hearing, held in Paris on Tuesday, August 25, saw detailed legal debate about both Gasly’s penalty and the wider consequences of rescinding post-race sanctions, leaving the four judges with a complex decision. The Race understands that parties at the closed-door session were told the verdict could take between two and three weeks.
Why it matters:
At stake is Gasly’s third-place finish from Monaco, which Alpine wants to keep and Red Bull wants for Isack Hadjar. Beyond that, the case tests how F1 handles penalties when the underlying timing data is flawed — a question with implications for every team.
The details:
- McLaren and Red Bull appealed after Gasly’s post-race time penalty for pit-lane speeding was wiped out by a Right of Review hearing.
- A LIDAR scan showed the distance between timing loops was 77cm shorter than originally configured, meaning Gasly’s speed could not be proven to have exceeded the 60km/h limit.
- That evidence couldn’t help drivers who already served their penalties in the race, such as McLaren’s Oscar Piastri and Mercedes’ George Russell.
- McLaren team principal Andrea Stella said his team had a “double intent” in going to the ICA: recovering points lost through Piastri’s penalty, and clarifying the principles of when and how penalties are enforced.
- Stella added that the removal of the penalty “introduces some significant elements of concern” about the consistency of sanction policing.
What's next:
The ICA judges are expected to take two to three weeks to issue their judgment. For Gasly and Alpine, that means another anxious wait to know if their Monaco podium stands — or if Hadjar inherits the result. The ruling could also set a precedent for how timing accuracy and post-race sanctions are handled in the future.
