F1 readies Imola contingency as 2026 finale uncertainty grows

Formula 1 is preparing Imola as a contingency venue for the season finale, but the championship's clear intention is to finish 2026 with the Qatar and Abu Dhabi Grands Prix as planned.

The ongoing Middle East conflict has already forced the cancellation of the Bahrain and Saudi Arabian GPs earlier this year. With the season finale set to follow the Las Vegas round on November 21, F1 cannot afford to be left without a ready-to-go alternative if the situation deteriorates.

The details:

• F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali said in late July that a decision would come by mid-September if the situation wasn't resolved. Teams now expect an answer by mid-October after discussions in the F1 Commission.
• Logistical deadline: Sea freight to Qatar will be cutting it fine for a race at the end of November, making mid-October the point of no return.
• Imola readiness: Work has begun at the Italian circuit to ensure it can host a race if needed, including grandstand setup. F1 will cover these costs even if the switch never happens, guaranteeing a viable backup.
• Crew challenges: Haas team principal Ayao Komatsu noted that European motorhome crews typically move to winter jobs, so alternative personnel would need to be found.

Audi boss Mattia Binotto dismissed concerns about a December race in Italy, noting average temperatures in Imola at that time of year are hotter than Las Vegas. "It's more from the organisation and the logistics, really," he said. "Mid-October, hopefully we may do the right decision."
