F1 Safety Car: More Laps Than Most Teams, Driven by a Legend

Summary
The F1 safety car, driven by veteran Bernd Maylander, has led 127 laps this season, outperforming Mercedes and Ferrari. Driving the Aston Martin Vantage and DBX 707 medical car, both noted as genuine racing machines, reveals the critical, often underestimated, roles of safety and medical personnel in F1.

The F1 safety car has led more laps in the 2025 Formula 1 season than many top teams, having completed 127 laps across four race weekends. This places it ahead of Mercedes (54 laps) and Ferrari (22 laps), but behind McLaren (419 laps) and Red Bull (181 laps).

Bernd Maylander, the driver of the safety car, possesses more F1 experience than Fernando Alonso.

Since last year, F1 has deployed two Aston Martin Vantages as safety cars for half of the races, alternating with the Mercedes AMG GT.

The Race had the opportunity to drive both the Aston Martin Vantage safety car and the Aston Martin DBX 707 medical car at Aston Martin's Stowe test circuit in Silverstone. Interviews were also conducted with veteran safety car driver Bernd Maylander and medical car driver Karl Reindler to shed light on their crucial, yet often underestimated, roles in F1.
