What is ADUO and why it's a massive opportunity for F1 teams

The FIA is set to announce within days which power unit suppliers qualify for the ADUO (Additional Development and Upgrade Opportunities) program. For manufacturers like Ferrari and Audi, it could be the lifeline needed to close a growing gap to Mercedes.

Why it matters:

ADUO is designed to prevent any single PU supplier from establishing the kind of stranglehold Mercedes enjoyed from 2014. By offering extra upgrades and budget to those trailing the benchmark, it aims to keep the field closer and competition healthier over the 2026–2030 era.

The details:

• How ADUO works: The FIA measures ICE performance across a window (Canadian GP to Monaco GP). A deficit of 2–4% to the leader earns one upgrade token and up to $3M extra cost cap headroom. Deficits over 4% bring two tokens and up to $11M.
• Current hierarchy: Mercedes has won every grand prix so far, with 219 points. Ferrari is 71 points behind, with McLaren and Red Bull further back. Mercedes is seen as the ICE benchmark, with Red Bull Powertrains-Ford surprisingly close.
• Grey zones: Ferrari and Audi are believed to hover near the 2% threshold—the difference between receiving aid and nothing. Honda likely qualifies for multiple upgrades.
