Wharton and Sharp endure mixed Silverstone weekend in Formula 3
Louis Sharp and James Wharton left Silverstone with mixed results after a Formula 3 weekend that delivered Prema's best qualifying of the season but only limited rewards. Sharp battled back from a mid-race clash to finish fourth in Sunday's feature, while Wharton was stripped of a points finish by a five-second penalty for weaving during a Safety Car restart.
Why it matters:
For a rookie pairing still searching for consistent results, converting Silverstone's clear single-lap pace into big points is becoming increasingly urgent. The weekend showed both drivers have the speed to run at the front, yet a combination of incidents and technical setbacks left them well outside the championship top 10.
The details:
- Sharp started the feature from third and dropped to fourth on the opening lap while conserving tyres. As rivals faded mid-race, he pushed forward and briefly took a podium position before contact with Theophile Nael forced him wide. Nael later received a 10-second penalty, restoring Sharp to fourth in the final classification.
- Wharton ran inside the top 10 during the feature and appeared set to score until stewards handed him a five-second penalty for weaving behind the Safety Car, dropping him from the points to 11th. A technical issue had already spoiled Saturday's sprint, costing him a likely podium after he ran as high as third.
- The weekend began with genuine promise in qualifying. Sharp lined up third for the feature and Wharton ninth, giving the Australian fourth on the sprint grid. Sharp also drove from 10th to eighth in the sprint to add to his points tally.
What's next:
The series continues at Spa-Francorchamps from July 17-19, where both drivers will aim to turn strong grid positions into substantial results. Wharton currently holds 15th in the drivers' championship on 19 points, with Sharp two places behind on 17.
