Silverstone and Spa next to get F1 strategy shake-up

Summary
Pirelli is set to shake up F1 tyre strategies for the British and Belgian GPs, introducing a gap in compounds for Spa (C1, C3, C4) and a softer selection for Silverstone (C2, C3, C4) to discourage one-stop races and encourage more varied strategies.

Pirelli is set to introduce a strategy shake-up with its tyre selection for the upcoming British and Belgian Grands Prix, aiming to counter the growing trend of one-stop strategies in Formula 1.

Amidst teams favoring single pit stops this season, F1's tyre supplier is pushing for more aggressive compound choices.

While recent events saw the use of the softest C6 compound, this isn't viable for high-force tracks like Silverstone and Spa-Francorchamps.

For these July races, Pirelli is trying two different approaches:

  • Silverstone: One step softer than before, using the C2, C3, and C4 compounds.
  • Spa: Introducing a gap in compounds to deter one-stop strategies. They will use the C1, C3, and C4 compounds, skipping the C2. This is the first time compounds have been skipped in the current ground effect era.

The idea behind the Spa selection is to make the hardest option (C1) significantly slower over a stint compared to the C3 and C4. Pirelli's motorsport director Mario Isola explained: "If you want to go one stop hard/medium, you are penalised by the fact that hard is much slower. So someone could choose a more aggressive strategy with mediums and soft for the race."

Pirelli also announced the C3, C4, and C5 compounds will be used for the Austrian and Hungarian Grands Prix, held before and after Silverstone and Spa, as the C6 is deemed unsuitable for those tracks.
