Resurfaced Mexico City Circuit Leaves Tyre Strategy Wide Open
Pirelli has mapped out four viable tyre strategies for the Mexico City Grand Prix, but fresh asphalt at the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez has left teams genuinely unsure which route is best over 71 laps.
Why it matters:
Strategy calls could decide this race. The circuit sits more than 2,200 metres above sea level, stripping downforce and increasing sliding, which raises the risk of front graining. Add a resurfaced track and the usual reference points disappear.
The details:
- Preferred one-stop: start on mediums, pit between laps 35 and 41, finish on softs.
- Alternative one-stop: softs to hards, stopping between laps 24 and 30.
- Two-stop (soft-medium-soft): first stop laps 19-25, second laps 45-51.
- Two-stop (soft-hard-medium): hards through the middle, mediums to the flag.
- Pirelli factors a 22-second pit-stop loss into its modelling.
- New asphalt covers Turn 16 to Turn 1 and Turn 7 to Turn 16.
Paul Williams of Williams called the surface "the biggest unknown for the tyres," noting its roughness and grip will shape both graining risk and how difficult warm-up proves.
What's next:
Dario Marrafuschi, Pirelli's head of motorsport business, says simulations show "no significant difference in total race time" between the medium-soft one-stop and the soft-medium-soft two-stop. That pushes the decision towards traffic — how many cars a driver must clear after each stop. Three practice sessions should sharpen the picture, but the final call will hinge on car characteristics and aero set-up as much as tyre life.
