Rare Senna-driven Williams FW16 set for auction at $4m–$6m

Summary
A rare Ayrton Senna-driven Williams FW16—one of two surviving examples and long held by his family—heads to RM Sotheby’s New York, with a $4m–$6m estimate and unrestored provenance.

A rare Williams FW16 driven by Ayrton Senna during his brief 1994 season has been listed for public auction by RM Sotheby’s in New York. Chassis FW16B-01—originally FW16-01—is one of only two surviving Senna-driven FW16s and spent roughly 30 years with the Senna family. The pre-sale estimate is $4m–$6m USD.

Why it matters:

Senna’s Williams chapter is among F1’s most poignant what-ifs. He joined the reigning champions after leaving McLaren, only for revised rules banning active suspension to make the FW16 difficult. He still took pole at all three grands prix he entered for Williams, but never finished a race before his fatal crash at Imola in a different chassis, FW16-02.

The details:

  • Senna used this chassis in the warm-up at Interlagos, where it was the spare car, and later at a Jerez test with Damon Hill, covering 842km.
  • Before it was handed to the Senna family, David Coulthard made his F1 debut in it in Spain; Nigel Mansell also raced it in France. Hill tested it as a spare, meaning three world champions drove the same chassis.
  • Williams upgraded it to FW16B specification after its final race at Silverstone and retained it for testing and spare duties.
  • It was presented to Senna’s family after Williams won the 1994 constructors’ title, honouring a contract clause. It remains unrestored, with Senna’s personal seat added during the family’s ownership.

What’s next:

The car’s first-ever public sale will test the market for Senna memorabilia and 1990s F1 machinery. Given its provenance, limited survival and untouched condition, the estimate looks credible—though final bidding could exceed it.
