Racing Bulls settled Spa upgrade with Silverstone qualifying battle
Racing Bulls team principal Alan Permane revealed that rookie Lindblad secured the team's sole Spa-Francorchamps upgrade by out-qualifying Liam Lawson at the British Grand Prix. With only one chassis modification possible in the short gap between Silverstone and Belgium, the squad turned a logistical headache into a direct shootout between its drivers.
Why it matters:
The team has found genuine momentum since introducing a redesigned floor in Canada, stringing together four consecutive double points finishes. In a congested midfield where every tenth counts, allocating a single upgrade fairly was critical to maintaining harmony while preserving the competitive edge that has propelled Racing Bulls up the order.
The details:
- The Spa package required shrinking the roll hoop and included revised cooling components, a new rear wing, and updated front brake drums.
- Permane presented three options to the drivers in Austria: delay both updates until Hungary, flip a coin, or let their Silverstone qualifying positions decide. Both drivers immediately rejected delaying the upgrade and signed up for the contest.
- With both entries reaching Q3, the battle went down to the wire. Lindblad continued to improve through the final session and snatched ninth on the grid, while Lawson could not better his last effort and settled for tenth, handing the upgrade to the rookie by a single position.
- Lindblad ran the revised specification in Belgium, while Lawson was slated to receive the identical chassis update for the following round in Hungary.
What's next:
Permane confirmed that Lawson will receive automatic priority should the team encounter another single-car upgrade scenario later in the season. Racing Bulls is also understood to be preparing another significant package before the end of the year, and sustaining its current trajectory will be vital as it bids to establish itself as the clear leader of the midfield pack.
