Pierre Gasly shocks Monza with stunning first F1 pole

Pierre Gasly pulled off a Monza shock by taking his first Formula 1 pole position. The Frenchman jumped from third to first on his final Q3 lap, edging George Russell by just over half a tenth and handing Alpine its first pole as a constructor.

Why it matters:

This is a landmark result for Alpine and proof that Gasly can deliver when it counts. It also shakes up the usual front-running order.

The Details:

• Russell starts second for Mercedes. Oscar Piastri was third for McLaren despite aborting his final lap, but is under investigation for impeding Liam Lawson.
• Charles Leclerc outqualified Lewis Hamilton, giving Ferrari fourth and fifth. Max Verstappen managed only sixth for Red Bull, again unhappy with the balance.
• Championship leader Kimi Antonelli qualified seventh but will start from the back after an engine penalty, promoting Franco Colapinto and giving Alpine a double top-10.
• Lando Norris was ninth, just ahead of Arvid Lindblad. Gabriel Bortoleto missed Q3 by 0.001s, settling for 11th behind Hamilton.
• Liam Lawson also has an engine penalty. Yuki Tsunoda's fuel leak left him 17th, while Bottas again beat Perez at Cadillac.

What's next:

Gasly starts on pole, but holding off Russell, Piastri and the Ferraris over race distance is another challenge. Antonelli's charge from the back adds intrigue.
