Piastri Stripped of Mexico City Points After 10-Second Post-Race Penalty
Oscar Piastri has lost his Mexico City Grand Prix points haul after stewards handed him a 10-second post-race penalty for a late collision with Arvid Lindblad. The McLaren driver had crossed the line seventh but falls to 15th in the classification, handing the final point to Gabriel Bortoleto.
Why it matters:
The penalty erases a hard-fought result from a driver who needs every point he can get, and it reshuffles the midfield scrap behind him. For McLaren the cost is doubled: a car with severe sidepod and bargeboard damage, plus a lost point in the constructors' fight.
The details:
- Piastri went around the outside of Turn 1 to try to grab the inside of Turn 2, but clipped the left-rear of Lindblad's Racing Bulls, destroying the car and sending it into the barriers. The safety car was deployed.
- He finished 19.475s behind winner Max Verstappen before the verdict landed.
- Stewards found Piastri was "never fully alongside" Lindblad, "so was not able to claim the right to the corner."
- They added that he "could have avoided the collision if he had moved further to the left after Turn 1, even if this involved leaving the track prior to Turn 2."
- Franco Colapinto, Liam Lawson and Pierre Gasly each move up one place, with Bortoleto now in P10.
- Colapinto and Gasly remain under investigation for an alleged yellow-flag infringement and could yet lose their points.
What's next:
The yellow-flag inquiry could shuffle the order once more before the results are locked in, leaving the back of the points vulnerable. For Piastri and McLaren, the immediate job is damage assessment — the floor, sidepods and bargeboards took a heavy hit, and the turnaround before the next round will be tight.
