Alpine's Colapinto and Gasly lose Mexico City points after yellow flag penalties
Franco Colapinto and Pierre Gasly have both lost their Mexico City Grand Prix points after post-race penalties for separate yellow flag infringements, with the Alpine pair dropped from P8 and P10 and Isack Hadjar and Ryo Hirakawa promoted into the points. It was a hard-fought double score for Alpine that unravelled in the stewards' room.
Why it matters:
Alpine left the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez with nothing to show for a race they had managed well across 71 laps. The rulings are also a reminder of how strictly race control is policing yellow flag compliance — and how costly a few tenths of hesitation can be when telemetry is compared across the whole field.
The details:
- Colapinto was penalised for failing to slow sufficiently through a single yellow sector, taking a 10-second penalty and one penalty point. The stewards accepted there was sufficient doubt over an earlier double yellow sector, so found no breach there.
- Gasly's case was judged more seriously. His reduction in speed through a double yellow sector was measured against other cars passing through the same area and deemed insufficient, earning him a stop-and-go and two penalty points.
- The Argentine had started P11 and gained early, running as high as P7 in the opening laps after out-qualifying his team mate.
- With Oscar Piastri also penalised post-race for causing a collision, the final scorers read: Liam Lawson P7, Gabriel Bortoleto P8, Hadjar P9 and Hirakawa P10.
What's next:
Alpine has no time to dwell on it, with another race weekend arriving immediately. The lost points could prove expensive in a tight midfield scrap, and both drivers will know the stewards are watching the delta closely under yellows.
