Piastri loses Mexico City points after post-race penalty
Oscar Piastri has lost his Mexico City Grand Prix points after stewards ruled he caused a Lap 59 collision with Arvid Lindblad. The McLaren driver was penalised post-race and dropped out of the points. Max Verstappen won, while Kimi Antonelli clinched his maiden title in third.
Why it matters:
The penalty costs Piastri six points and compounds a difficult weekend in which he started 12th after a poor qualifying. It also underlines the fine margins in wheel-to-wheel racing: stewards judged Piastri never earned the right to the corner.
The details:
- Stewards found Piastri was never fully alongside Lindblad and could have avoided the Turn 1 contact by moving further left. The collision sent Lindblad into the barriers and triggered a Safety Car.
- The incident was deemed a breach of Appendix L, Chapter IV, Article 2 d) of the FIA International Sporting Code.
- Piastri argued Lindblad shut the door late and pushed him wide; Nico Rosberg backed the stewards, saying Piastri should have backed out.
- The penalty promotes Franco Colapinto to seventh, Liam Lawson to eighth, Pierre Gasly to ninth and Gabriel Bortoleto into 10th.
What's next:
Piastri's title hopes take a hit, and McLaren must regroup quickly. With Antonelli crowned champion, attention shifts to Piastri's response.
