New Imola GP Evidence Emerges After F1 Driver Hits Out at ‘Totally Unfair’ FIA Decision
Oliver Bearman's Q1 elimination at Imola has sparked debate, as evidence suggests he may have been unfairly penalized. Former F1 driver and Sky pundit Anthony Davidson analyzed the incident involving Bearman's final lap time being deleted.
Bearman seemingly secured his place in Q2 with a last-lap effort. However, Franco Colapinto's crash and subsequent red flags led to controversy.
Stewards stated Bearman was '3.2 seconds' too late, with a red flag showing on the start gantry. Bearman and Haas contested this, claiming no red flag was visible on track or on his steering wheel when he crossed the line.
Bearman told media:
"I mean, we get the red lights on our dash. That, for me, didn’t happen until quite a way after I crossed the line.
"Watching the onboard video, it was clear that there was no red flag displayed when I crossed the line.
"So I believe it’s totally unfair to have it deleted. I feel like, once they make a decision – even if it’s wrong, clearly wrong – they’re not going to turn back on it. And that seems a bit harsh."
Davidson's analysis supported Bearman's view. He examined footage frame-by-frame, concluding that the red lights visible were for the end of the session, not a red flag.
Davidson noted a "discrepancy" between when the trackside red lights appeared and when the steering wheel lights and graphics updated. While a physically waved flag takes priority, it's difficult to confirm if one was displayed precisely at the line. Haas was reportedly invited to discuss the decision with stewards and the race director.
