Mercedes tops Spanish GP practice long runs as tyre degradation looms

George Russell topped Friday practice long runs for the Spanish Grand Prix, 0.13s per lap ahead of Max Verstappen after adjusting for fuel and tyres. Kimi Antonelli was third, 0.55s back, but the bigger story is Mercedes' race-pace edge and surprising tyre degradation on Madrid's new circuit.

Mercedes often hides its hand on Friday. Last weekend in Italy, it was level with Ferrari in long runs before pulling 0.8s per lap clear on Sunday. If that pattern repeats in Madrid, the Silver Arrows will be the team to beat.

The details:

• Ferrari and McLaren were off the pace: both Ferraris were ~0.9s per lap slower than Mercedes, while Oscar Piastri was 1.51s down. Lando Norris couldn't complete long runs due to technical problems.
• Mercedes' advantage lies in the final sector, where it has a clear top-speed gain in race trim. Telemetry shows Mercedes uses less battery power in sector one, saving energy for the end of the lap.
• Haas was the midfield surprise: Esteban Ocon's long run was just 0.92s off Russell, putting him nearly on Ferrari's level. Racing Bulls couldn't do representative long runs after Arvid Lindblad's crash.
• Tyre degradation is the wildcard. Toto Wolff reported 0.8s-per-lap degradation in FP1, joking his strategy chief suggested six stops. FP2 degradation dropped to ~0.3s per lap, pointing to a two-stop race. Pirelli, however, expects less degradation as the track rubbers in.

With the new Madrid circuit still evolving, teams face major setup changes before Saturday. If Mercedes' long-run advantage holds and the tyre picture clears, they could dominate. But Friday's pecking order is far from final.
