Mercedes confirms Monza penalty for Antonelli

Kimi Antonelli will drop 10 places on the grid for the Italian Grand Prix after Mercedes confirmed it will fit a full new power unit to his car. The championship leader has reached the limit on multiple engine components after a season of reliability issues, and Mercedes has decided Monza is the most favorable venue to take the hit.

Antonelli leads the drivers' championship by 59 points over George Russell and Lewis Hamilton, who are tied for second. He is also chasing history: no Italian driver has won the Italian GP since 1966. Mercedes will introduce all new power unit components, including the V6 and exhaust, rather than spreading penalties across multiple races. Toto Wolff said the decision was purely strategic: "In theory, our calculations say that is the best track to take it. Obviously, algorithms don't take the nationality into consideration. But we are here to fight for a championship and not get the most PR."

Antonelli, who finished second at the Dutch GP last weekend, supports the call: "I still think it's the best track to take it. It will give me a chance to do a great result and bring home good points."

George Russell is also expected to exceed his component allowance before the season ends, but Mercedes has not yet decided when to take that penalty. The team is unlikely to compromise both cars at the same event with both championships at stake. The Italian Grand Prix runs from September 4-6.
