McLaren hands F2 champion Fornaroli another F1 test at COTA
McLaren reserve driver Leonardo Fornaroli added another day of Formula 1 running at Circuit of the Americas this week, completing 77 laps in the 2023-spec MCL60. The reigning Formula 2 champion is working through a comprehensive test program as he builds experience in grand prix machinery.
Why it matters:
McLaren is investing heavily in its driver development pipeline, giving Fornaroli valuable track time alongside his simulator duties. With no immediate race seat available, these tests are critical for his growth and the team's depth of talent.
The details:
- Fornaroli, who joined McLaren as a reserve after winning the 2024 F2 title, has now tested at three circuits: Barcelona (112 laps in March), Silverstone (68 laps in April), and COTA (77 laps this week).
- The Austin test came right after he served as the team's reserve at the Canadian Grand Prix. Variable temperatures provided a range of grip conditions.
- McLaren's run plan included long and short runs, grid start procedures, and formation lap practice.
- “It’s always amazing to drive an F1 car. I’m getting more comfortable with the car and also the team,” Fornaroli said. “This was my first time driving around COTA. I really enjoyed it.”
What's next:
Fornaroli will support the F1 team from the simulator for the Monaco Grand Prix. He is already looking forward to his next on-track opportunity, as McLaren continues to develop him through its driver development programme.
