Leclerc Warns Mexican GP Order Will Be Settled by Turn 3
Charles Leclerc expects the Mexican Grand Prix to be decided almost entirely in its opening metres, warning that overtaking at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez will be near-impossible once the field settles. The Ferrari driver topped both of Friday's practice sessions but qualified only third, behind team-mate Lewis Hamilton — who took his first pole in red — and Mercedes' George Russell.
Why it matters:
With nine points covering second through fifth in the championship, and Kimi Antonelli holding a first match point on Sunday, track position carries unusual weight. Mexico's thin air and low-grip surface already punish following cars, and Leclerc argues the overtake mode does little to change that.
The details:
- Leclerc was quickest in FP1 and FP2 and insists the car has "felt good since FP1", giving him belief in his race pace despite the grid slot.
- His verdict on passing: "I've tried more in FP2, and it's just very difficult because the overtake mode doesn't do much. Whatever the standing is after Turn 3, it's going to be very difficult then to overtake."
- Hamilton's pole is his first since joining Maranello, with Russell completing an all-Mercedes-engined front row.
- Leclerc sits fifth on 233 points, nine shy of Russell in second. Hamilton is third, Max Verstappen fourth, and Antonelli leads the standings.
What's next:
Leclerc accepts Turn 1 is his best chance and may lean on Hamilton's tow, but his plan is cautious: "I'll keep my head down as much as possible and see what's possible." Lights go out at 2pm local time (8pm UK) on Sunday. If his read on the circuit holds, the podium order may be settled long before the chequered flag.
