Lando Norris confirms McLaren discussion to fix Monza mishap
Lando Norris has revealed McLaren held an internal discussion after a qualifying execution failure at the Italian Grand Prix left the drivers' champion starting eighth at Monza. Team principal Andrea Stella had already flagged the need for sharper execution, and Norris now admits the team could have done better — but insists there's no simple fix.
Why it matters:
As constructors' champions, McLaren is positioned at the very start of the pit lane, forcing it to leave first when the Q3 clock is ticking. At tracks where a tow is worth significant lap time, that's a structural disadvantage that can cost crucial grid positions. With the all-new Madring circuit featuring a 550-metre pit lane, the same dilemma awaits in Spain.
The details:
- The core issue came on the final Q3 runs: Norris gave Oscar Piastri a slipstream on the first push lap, but Piastri locked up and ran wide at the first chicane on the second lap, denying Norris the reciprocal tow.
- Piastri qualified third but dropped to sixth via a grid penalty; Norris was left ninth, later promoted to eighth.
- "I'd rather have that problem and win a championship than not; it's a good price to pay, but I believe we could have done a better job last weekend by not going out first," Norris told media including RacingNews365.
- Norris stressed the risk-reward nature of the situation: "It's not like you can just put a plan in place and it's going to work... Everyone wanted to have a slipstream. We're at the end of the pit lane. You have to go first."
What's next:
Norris made clear the lack of priority on his first Q3 lap compounded the problem. "I had no opportunity to put in a good lap, and therefore no opportunity to start highly in the race... We have to do something more." With the Madring's short pit lane creating a similar tow dilemma, McLaren's execution will be under the microscope again in Spain.
