Komatsu Stays Silent as Haas Benches Ocon for Mexico City Weekend

Summary
Haas dropped Esteban Ocon from the Mexico City Grand Prix on Saturday morning, putting reserve driver Ryo Hirakawa in the car, and team principal Ayao Komatsu is refusing to say why beyond confirming Ocon isn't ill.

Haas pulled Esteban Ocon out of the Mexico City Grand Prix weekend on Saturday morning, handing reserve driver Ryo Hirakawa the car for the remainder of the event at the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez. The team offered no explanation beyond confirming Ocon was not ill, and team principal Ayao Komatsu has added nothing since.

Speaking to Sky Sports F1 during final practice, Komatsu shut down every line of inquiry. The silence has left the paddock to fill in the blanks.

Why it matters:

Swapping a race driver mid-weekend is about as drastic as it gets in F1, and teams don't do it lightly. Haas is scrapping for constructors' position and just handed a critical Saturday and Sunday to a driver with almost no grand prix mileage. Whatever the reason, the team has decided the cost is worth paying — and it raises fresh questions about Ocon's standing inside a squad he joined at the start of 2025.

The details:

  • The announcement landed Saturday morning, with no reason attached other than the confirmation that illness played no part.
  • Asked simply to explain Ocon's absence, Komatsu said: "I can't tell you much, but at least I can tell you that he's not ill. That's as much as I can tell you."
  • Pressed on whether Ocon's fired-up radio messages during FP2 over the team's run plan contributed to the decision, Komatsu replied: "No, I'm sorry, but I can't go into any details."
  • Hirakawa steps in cold, with qualifying at the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez looming that afternoon.

What's next:

The driver question doesn't end in Mexico. Hirakawa is committed to Toyota in the World Endurance Championship at Monza next weekend and will be unavailable for São Paulo, and Komatsu wouldn't be drawn on who would fill the reserve role if Ocon is again absent.

"Honestly, the only thing I can say is we are focused on what's right in front of us, so trying to get Ryo in the best shape for quali this afternoon," he said, adding that he has "not got there yet" on the following weekend.

For now, Haas is asking its rookie to deliver on a circuit he has never raced, while its headline driver watches from the garage.
