How worried should Bottas really be about his F1 future?
Valtteri Bottas's unconvincing start at Cadillac has sparked online speculation about his immediate future, but his seat is safe for 2026 and likely 2027. The real concern is a growing performance deficit to Sergio Perez that could make Bottas the one squeezed out when the team eventually looks to younger talent.
Why it matters:
Cadillac deliberately signed two experienced drivers to stabilize its entry into Formula 1. If Perez continues to set the benchmark, the question of which veteran stays long-term will tilt heavily in his favor. Bottas's window to prove he can match or exceed Perez is narrowing.
The Details:
- In Canada, Bottas was clearly second-best: eight tenths slower in qualifying, a lonely race while Perez fought midfielders. Bottas blamed set-up struggles and oversteer that couldn't be cured even with a locked differential.
- Over five race weekends, Perez has been quicker in five of seven clean qualifying sessions. The exceptions: China (compromised session) and Miami (deployment issue on final lap).
- The operational problems and reliability issues affecting Cadillac have made clean weekends rare, so Bottas's difficulties are not entirely his fault. But when conditions are equal, Perez has the higher peak.
- Perez has shown hunger, pushing the team in meetings and demanding improvements immediately after the debut race. Bottas is naturally quieter — not a flaw, but a contrast that may influence perception.
- No obvious replacement exists for now: Colton Herta lacks superlicence eligibility, and reserve Zhou Guanyu is hardly a guaranteed upgrade.
Between the Lines:
The off-track contributions that justified signing Bottas will diminish as Cadillac matures. The assumption coming in was that Bottas retained his qualifying edge, while Perez's racecraft was his strength. So far, Perez has rediscovered his one-lap speed, reversing expectations.
What's Next:
Bottas has the rest of the season to close the gap. If the trend continues, his F1 future — secure for now — will face a real threat when Cadillac considers its 2027 lineup. The clock is ticking.
