Haas blocks drivers as Schumacher blasts Verstappen’s ‘not very smart’ Nordschleife run

Max Verstappen's recent run at the Nordschleife, driving a Ferrari 296 GT3, has sparked debate within the F1 world.

Schumacher's Concerns

Former F1 driver Ralf Schumacher described Verstappen's Nordschleife outing as "not very smart." He told Sky Deutschland that the circuit is "incredibly dangerous" and that driving at high speeds in GT3 cars carries significant risk. Schumacher recalled DTM races being banned at the Nordschleife due to excessive speeds, adding that he wouldn't have permitted such an activity if he were a team principal.

Haas's Stance

Haas team principal Ayao Komatsu shared similar reservations, stating he would forbid his drivers, Oliver Bearman and Esteban Ocon, from participating in similar events.

Why it matters: Komatsu differentiated Verstappen, a multiple World Champion, from Bearman, a rookie, and Ocon, who still has much to prove. He stressed that Bearman and Ocon must prioritize their F1 commitments, including managing their physical and mental condition, working with engineers, and utilizing simulators amidst a demanding 24-race calendar. Komatsu believes his drivers have ample focus required for their F1 careers without additional high-risk activities.
