Formula E adopts full F1 Mexico City layout for Gen4 era

Formula E will race the full Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez circuit for the first time, adopting the same 4.3km layout used by Formula 1 for the Mexico City E-Prix on 16 January 2027. The change replaces the series' previous shortened 2.6km infield loop and is a direct response to the demands of the new Gen4 car.

Why it matters:

The switch signals a strategic shift for Formula E. Gen4's 450 kW race power, 600 kW attack mode, permanent all-wheel drive, and larger 55 kWh battery require circuits with longer straights and higher energy recovery potential. Full permanent tracks are becoming more viable than the tight street circuits that defined the series' early years.

The details:

• The full 4.3km layout runs the entire main straight, through the sweeping middle Esses, and directly through the Foro Sol stadium section before exiting onto the final part of the Peraltada corner.
• One Formula E twist remains: a chicane on the start-finish straight, placed where the old infield cut once began, creates a dedicated heavy braking zone for energy regeneration.
• The stadium section is identical to F1's, a notoriously demanding sequence at 2,200m altitude where reduced downforce leaves cars sliding through slow direction changes.
• Tickets have been released only for the Foro Sol stadium, the final corner, and the start/finish straight.

What's next:

Mexico City is not the only circuit embracing change. Brands Hatch is expected to use its full Grand Prix layout when it hosts Formula E for the first time in May 2027, while Zandvoort will stick with a modified configuration. Based on recent social media naming, these events are likely to be branded as the British E-Prix and Dutch E-Prix.
