FIA Warns Drivers Over Mexican GP Lap-One Corner-Cutting as Hamilton Takes First Ferrari Pole
The FIA has warned drivers it will not tolerate a repeat of last year's lap-one corner-cutting at the Mexican Grand Prix, telling teams that cars leaving the track in the opening corners and holding position will be judged to have gained a lasting advantage. Lewis Hamilton starts from pole for the first time in a Ferrari grand prix, with George Russell alongside and Charles Leclerc third.
Why it matters:
The run to Turn 1 at the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez is the longest on the calendar, so the tow hands chasing cars a genuine speed advantage — and last year's race showed how quickly it turns messy. Leclerc ran wide at Turn 1, briefly took the lead, then lifted into Turn 4 to hand the place back to Lando Norris, while Max Verstappen rejoined without sanction. With passing expected to be scarce on Sunday, the opening 500 metres carry outsized weight.
The details:
- Stewards will treat every car as both attacking and defending through Turns 1-3 and 4-6 on lap one, and on the first lap after any safety car or red flag restart.
- A driver who leaves the track and stays ahead of closely following cars must cede the position by Turn 4 or Turn 12 respectively, or risk a penalty.
- Hamilton's lap: pole without a single fastest sector — a tidy, error-free effort rather than one built on raw pace.
- Leclerc's concern: the Monegasque says his race pace has looked strong since FP1 but doubts overtaking is realistic. "The overtake mode doesn't do much," he said. "Whatever is the standing after Turn 3, it's going to be very difficult then to overtake."
- Track position: Leclerc conceded it was "a bit of a shame" his qualifying lap came up short given how hard it will be to recover places in clean air.
What's next:
All eyes on the braking zone. Hamilton, who has never started from pole in Mexico City, said he will simply focus on "optimising the start" — and the stewards will be watching just as closely.
