FIA Tweaks 2026 Power Unit Rules to Boost Struggling Honda

Summary
The FIA has revised its 2026 ADUO system to give struggling Honda extra development allowances, including an additional $8 million and more dyno hours for manufacturers falling 10% behind on ICE power. The first review period now starts after the Canadian Grand Prix.

The FIA has made further adjustments to the 2026 power unit regulations, expanding the ADUO (Additional Development and Upgrade Opportunities) system to give lagging manufacturers like Honda more room to catch up. The changes include a new performance deficit column and an extra $8 million allowance for this year only.

Why it matters:

After a horror start to the 2026 season, Aston Martin's Honda-powered cars are struggling with both performance and reliability. Without regulatory intervention, the gap could widen—repeating the previous era's dominance by a single engine builder. These tweaks are designed to level the playing field and keep the championship competitive.

The details:

  • The ADUO system gives sliding-scale benefits based on ICE Performance Index deficit. The FIA added a new bracket for manufacturers 10% or more behind (previously capped at 8%).
  • For that bracket, teams receive an extra $8 million cost cap allowance and 230 extra dyno hours per ADUO period.
  • The first ADUO period now runs from rounds 1-5 (ending after the Canadian Grand Prix), shifted from its original round 6 start due to the cancellation of Bahrain and Saudi Arabia. Periods 2 and 3 cover rounds 6-11 and 12-18.

What's next:

Honda is expected to bring "countermeasures" to Miami after its difficult start. With the first ADUO window opening after Montreal, the Japanese manufacturer has a defined path to develop its way forward. However, ADUO is no silver bullet—catching up will still require time and execution.
