FIA Mandates Total Segregation of F1 and Non-F1 Operations for 2027
The FIA is implementing a massive clampdown on how teams manage personnel and infrastructure to prevent the exploitation of financial regulations. Starting in 2027, a strict "Chinese wall" will be mandated between F1 racing operations and non-F1 technology divisions, effectively ending the era of shared resources.
Why it matters:
For years, top teams have operated "Applied Science" or "Advanced Technology" arms—such as those at Red Bull, Mercedes, and Ferrari. The governing body has long suspected these units act as a shadow R&D pipeline, allowing teams to feed innovation into their F1 cars while keeping the associated salaries and costs off the official cost cap books.
The details:
- Physical Segregation: Factories must be divided into restricted zones with electronic access logs maintained for three years. Shared spaces like canteens and corridors are permitted for breaks, but no core work can be conducted in these areas.
- Digital Firewall: IT systems must be totally segregated. While information can flow from the F1 team to non-F1 divisions in limited cases, the reverse flow is strictly prohibited.
- Personnel Lockdown: Staff moving to the F1 side must undergo a three-month "cooling-off" period of total inactivity. Moving to a non-F1 role requires a new contract, a new email address, and a 12-month commitment to non-F1 work.
- Shared Assets: Facilities like wind tunnels and dynos will be designated as "Restricted Shared Areas," meaning they cannot be occupied by both F1 and non-F1 personnel simultaneously.
What's next:
This move signals the FIA's determination to eliminate "grey areas" in financial compliance. As we approach the 2027 season, several teams will be forced to fundamentally redesign their factory layouts and corporate structures to comply with these draconian measures, potentially disrupting internal workflows in the process.
