FIA Extends Power Unit Component Allowance Through 2028

Summary
The FIA has extended the 2026 power unit component leeway to 2027 and 2028, providing manufacturers a critical reliability buffer as they navigate evolving power-split regulations.

The FIA has decided to maintain the increased power unit (PU) component allowances introduced for the current 2026 season through 2028. Originally intended as a one-year transition bridge to mitigate the teething troubles of the new engine formula, the allowance will now remain in place for the next two seasons.

Why it matters:

Transitioning to a new engine architecture—specifically the removal of the MGU-H and the increased reliance on the MGU-K—is notoriously volatile. By extending this leeway, the FIA is prioritizing reliability and stability over strict penalties. This ensures that manufacturers can fine-tune the delicate balance between internal combustion and electrical power without the constant threat of grid penalties hindering sporting competition.

The Details:

  • Expanded Allocation: Through 2028, drivers are permitted four internal combustion engines (ICE), four turbochargers, and four exhaust systems, alongside three energy stores, three control electronics units, and three MGU-Ks per season.
  • The Evolving Power Split: The extension coincides with gradual technical shifts in how power is delivered:
    • 2026: 53% ICE / 47% Electric
    • 2027: 58% ICE / 42% Electric
    • 2028: 60% ICE / 40% Electric
  • Race Distance Impact: To accommodate higher fuel flow requirements resulting from the 2027 power shift, Grand Prix distances (excluding Monaco) will be trimmed from 305km to 290km for the 2027 season.

What's next:

While race distances are expected to return to their standard lengths in 2028, the technical focus will shift toward optimizing the final 60/40 power ratio. The extended allowance provides a vital safety net for teams as they finalize these adjustments, ensuring the 2028 season debuts with a matured and reliable power unit landscape.
