F1 Points All-Time Rankings: Where Do Hamilton, Verstappen and Alonso Feature?
The current crop of F1 drivers rank amongst the highest-ever points scorers in the history of the sport. This is partly due to the way points are awarded in their present form, and partly because of the success of some drivers.
Three current World Champions are in the top five highest-ever F1 points scorers, while the other two are recent retirees.
F1 Points: Where Are the Current Drivers in the All-Time Rankings?
The F1 points scoring system was revised entirely for 2010, increasing the points for a win from 10 up to 25. This explains the recency bias, with current drivers achieving high places on the list.
Other factors aiding modern drivers include:
- Points for top 10 finishers
- A point for fastest lap
- Points for Sprint races
- More reliable cars
- Increased number of races
For example, in the 17-race 2000 championship, only the top six finishers scored points. Cars were less reliable, making it harder to score compared to today.
Here is where each current driver ranks, plus the overall top 10:
- 263. Isack Hadjar – 5 points
- 250. Liam Lawson – 6 points
- 185. Oliver Bearman – 13 points
- 116. Kimi Antonelli – 48 points
- 87. Yuki Tsunoda – 100 points
- 45. Alex Albon – 270 points
- 37. Lance Stroll – 306 points
- 27. Pierre Gasly – 443 points
- 26. Esteban Ocon – 459 points
- 23. Oscar Piastri – 520 points
- 21. Nico Hulkenberg – 577 points
- 17. George Russell – 807 points
- 15. Lando Norris – 1122 points
- 12. Carlos Sainz – 1279.5 points
Overall Top 10
10. Charles Leclerc – 1483 points
Leclerc entered the top 10 after his eighth career victory (third in 2024) at the United States Grand Prix, overtaking Daniel Ricciardo. The Ferrari driver has been a regular point scorer since his 2018 debut and could climb further.
9. Michael Schumacher – 1566 points
The seven-time World Champion is less fairly represented due to racing most of his career under the old points system. Only his Mercedes years used the higher weighting. Had he raced under the modern system his whole career, he would have an estimated 4,660.2 points, placing him second only to Lewis Hamilton's total under the same system.
8. Nico Rosberg – 1594.5 points
Rosberg raced almost three-quarters of his career with the higher points system, including three years at dominant Mercedes. He retired at the peak of his career, but his total of 1594.5 points still places him comfortably in the top 10, highlighting the impact of the 2010 points change.
7. Sergio Perez – 1638 points
Perez has raced in F1 for over a decade since his 2011 debut, one year after the revised system. He moved ahead of Schumacher with a strong start to the 2024 season.
6. Valtteri Bottas – 1797 points
Bottas replaced Rosberg at Mercedes in 2017, playing a supporting role to Lewis Hamilton. He is looking to return to the grid in 2026 after becoming Mercedes' reserve driver.
5. Kimi Raikkonen – 1873 points
Raikkonen split his career almost equally between the old and new points systems. He won the 2007 title with Ferrari and returned in 2012 with Lotus, enjoying a career resurgence before retiring with 1873 points. Under the new system entirely, he would have an estimated 3,043 points.
4. Fernando Alonso – 2337 points
Debuting at the same time as Raikkonen, Alonso's career is also split between the systems, but he is currently adding to his tally with Aston Martin. He is unlikely to catch the driver ahead of him.
3. Sebastian Vettel – 3098 points
Vettel's four titles came early in the new points system era (2010-2013), quickly propelling him up the standings. He remained a regular scorer until a dip in form and two years at Aston Martin. Although retired, he hasn't ruled out a future return.
2. Max Verstappen – 3122.5 points
Verstappen overtook Vettel for second place after the 2025 Saudi Arabian Grand Prix. He has raced his entire career under the new points system, benefiting from Red Bull's dominance and extra points for fastest laps and sprints. He is rapidly climbing all F1 stats lists.
1. Lewis Hamilton – 4903.5 points
Lewis Hamilton tops the list. His uninterrupted career since 2007 means the majority was under the higher-points system. With a front-running car for most years and relentless consistency, he maximises results and avoids self-inflicted mistakes, resulting in his leading total.
