F1 Branded "Most Boring Sport Imaginable" by Five-Time Chess Champion Magnus Carlsen
Five-time World Chess Champion Magnus Carlsen has ignited a debate by calling Formula 1 "the most boring sport imaginable." His strong statement was made during a press conference at the Norway Chess 2025 tournament.
Carlsen, speaking after his win against Gukesh Dommaraju on May 26, 2025, characterized F1 as simply "driving around in a circle for a long time." He admitted that the start of a race offers an "exhilarating" spectacle due to the cars' power but found the subsequent racing to be "quite long-winded" with minimal discernible action.
According to Carlsen, F1's widespread appeal is more attributable to external elements such as driver personalities and effective marketing, rather than the inherent excitement of the racing itself.
These remarks surfaced soon after the Monaco Grand Prix, a race frequently criticized for its lack of overtaking opportunities. This year's Monaco event introduced a mandatory two-stop strategy aimed at enhancing the racing spectacle, but reports indicate that spectators were dissatisfied with the results. Martin Brundle, a Sky Sports F1 commentator, also weighed in on the new regulation in his column. He highlighted how teams might employ one car as a "sacrificial lamb" to engineer pit stop advantages for another, ultimately causing frustration for both drivers and the audience.
