Emilia Romagna GP: Verstappen Outsmarts McLaren Strategy for Victory

Summary
Max Verstappen secured his second win of the season at the Emilia Romagna GP, overcoming McLaren's strategy with a crucial early pass. Despite a late Safety Car, he held off Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri.

Max Verstappen’s crucial outside pass at Tamburello on the opening lap was the decisive moment in the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix, ultimately setting him up for victory.

Verstappen survived a late Safety Car restart to claim his second win of the season, finishing ahead of Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri.

Verstappen's Masterclass Over McLaren's Strategy

Pole-sitter Oscar Piastri led into the first corner, but Verstappen swiftly moved to the outside at Tamburello to take the lead. George Russell followed in third, with Lando Norris, Fernando Alonso, and Carlos Sainz rounding out the top six. Charles Leclerc gained a position to 10th, while Lewis Hamilton, on hard tires, dropped to 13th.

The pit stop phase began around Lap 11. Leclerc, Russell, and Sainz pitted early, with Leclerc executing an undercut. Piastri pitted on Lap 14, but a slow front-right wheel change cost him valuable time, dropping him to 11th behind Yuki Tsunoda, who was instructed to hold him up. Piastri eventually cleared Tsunoda and other drivers but was over 30 seconds behind Verstappen.

Lando Norris pitted on Lap 29, rejoining behind Hamilton and Leclerc. A Virtual Safety Car (VSC) for Esteban Ocon's retirement allowed Verstappen to pit cheaply, maintaining his lead. Alex Albon also pitted, which promoted Piastri back to second.

Upon the race's resumption, Verstappen held a 28-second lead over Norris. Albon and Piastri were third and fourth. Hamilton overtook Antonelli for fifth on Lap 34. Further down the order, Hamilton passed Isack Hadjar for fifth, Russell overtook Alonso for 10th, and Piastri moved onto the podium by passing Albon.

A Safety Car was deployed on Lap 46 for Kimi Antonelli's retirement. Verstappen and Norris pitted, with Piastri following suit. Leclerc remained out, reportedly due to a lack of suitable tires.

The race restarted on Lap 54. Verstappen quickly pulled away from Piastri, with Norris in close pursuit. Norris eventually passed Piastri for second place. Behind them, Leclerc initially defended from Albon, but Hamilton closed in. Albon's attempt to pass Leclerc resulted in him going off track, dropping him behind Hamilton.

Verstappen crossed the finish line six seconds ahead of Norris, securing a McLaren 1-2-3 podium with Piastri in third. Lewis Hamilton finished fourth, ahead of Alex Albon and Charles Leclerc.
