Leclerc Criticizes 'Vocal' George Russell After Hungarian GP Penalty

Summary
Leclerc criticizes George Russell's "vocal" radio comments after receiving a double penalty for defending against him at the Hungarian GP.

Charles Leclerc has openly criticized George Russell's "vocal" nature on team radio after receiving a double penalty at the Hungarian Grand Prix. The incident stemmed from a defensive move during their battle for the final podium spot.

Why it matters:

The incident highlights the fine line drivers walk between aggressive defense and unsportsmanlike conduct, often influenced by rivals' immediate radio complaints. For Leclerc, it resulted in a significant penalty and a super-licence point.

The incident:

As the Hungarian GP neared its end, Leclerc, battling a car issue, was being caught by Mercedes driver George Russell. Into Turn 1, Leclerc aggressively defended his position. Russell immediately took to the radio, exclaiming: "That was moving under braking, it is clearly not allowed."

The penalties:

Stewards swiftly handed Leclerc a five-second time penalty for the move. Russell passed for third on the very next lap at the same corner. To compound Leclerc's woes, he also received one penalty point on his super-licence for "driving erratically," his first in the 12-month period.

Leclerc's perspective:

Reflecting on the situation, Leclerc specifically pointed out Russell's tendency to be "vocal" on the radio. "I knew I was on the limit, but I don't have much opinion about it," Leclerc stated. "I felt like I moved before braking and then I braked, and obviously angled my car towards the apex, which is what I normally do. But I can imagine George being quite vocal on the radio, which is normally the case."

Leclerc added that he wasn't overly frustrated by the penalty's timing. "I don't mind it happening in a race like this. If there was a safety car late in the race and I took a five-second penalty, I would have probably been a lot more frustrated, but it wasn't the case."
