Cadillac's F1 Power Unit Prototype Revs Up, Ahead of Schedule

Summary
Cadillac's F1 entry in 2026 delayed PU until 2029. A functional prototype engine is ready, signaling progress. Team is on track, with chassis production underway.

Cadillac, the General Motors sub-brand, is set to enter Formula 1 in 2026, but its own power units (PUs) won't be ready until 2029. However, there's exciting news: the first prototype PU has been successfully tested.

Cadillac's F1 Power Unit: A Milestone Achieved

When the FIA invited expressions of interest for F1 teams in 2023, Andretti Global's entry, backed by General Motors, stood out. Although there were initial hurdles, with Formula One Management (FOM) showing reservations about a Michael Andretti-led team, GM's potential as a power unit supplier was highly valued.

FOM's approval came when Cadillac took the lead, becoming the team owner. The debut is scheduled for 2026, with the first phase focusing on getting the team on the grid, followed by the introduction of the power unit.

Despite the PU's full implementation in 2029, GM President Mark Reuss announced a significant development:

The first functional prototype has been successfully tested.

Reuss stated during a Miami Grand Prix press conference, as reported by Motorsport.com, that "development is already well underway." He added, "In fact, we fired up our first engine last week."

GM also shared images of the PU on a test bench. This is a significant step, even though it's still a prototype. The final version of the PU will be integrated into the Cadillac chassis. The official PU facility in North Carolina is slated for completion in 2027. Furthermore, chassis production has commenced.

Cadillac representatives confirmed in Miami: "We are working on the cars. We have been in the wind tunnel for a long time. The chassis has arrived, and we continue to expand our team. Many work streams are happening simultaneously."
