Cadillac fined €30,000 for Herta FP1 stoppage as FIA warns of sporting penalties

Cadillac has been handed a €30,000 fine, with €25,000 suspended, after Colton Herta's FP1 stoppage at Monza triggered a red flag. The stewards also issued a pointed warning: with this being the third clutch disengagement system (CDS) failure of the season, future breaches may carry sporting sanctions, not just financial ones.

The CDS is a critical safety component designed to allow a car to be quickly pushed clear of the track even if its main systems have failed. When it doesn't work, races are disrupted by red flags — and the FIA is clearly losing patience with repeat failures.

The details:

• Herta, standing in for Sergio Perez in his third FP1 outing of the season, stopped at the exit of the second Lesmo corner with around 40 minutes remaining.
• The session initially went to VSC, but was red-flagged because the MAC-26 couldn't be moved with the clutch still engaged. The team described it as a hydraulics issue.
• Stewards found a breach of Article C9.3 of the technical regulations: cars must have a means of disengaging the clutch for at least 15 minutes, even if hydraulic, pneumatic or electrical systems fail.
• The root cause was traced to a third-party lithium battery in the CDS. One of its four cells failed, leaving the system inoperable when the car's electronics were off.
• Cadillac showed the system was designed independently and had been tested the day before. It will now introduce daily or pre-session checks and a battery replacement programme.

What's next:

This marks the third CDS failure of the season, following similar penalties for Racing Bulls in Canada and McLaren in Monaco. The stewards accepted Cadillac's transparency, but stressed that responsibility ultimately rests with the team. With red flags carrying real sporting consequences, the message is clear: future failures may incur sporting penalties, not just financial ones.
