Antonelli wins inaugural Spanish GP as Norris rues VSC

Kimi Antonelli claimed his eighth victory of the season at the Spanish Grand Prix, extending his championship lead over Mercedes teammate George Russell to 81 points as Formula 1 made its debut at the Madring circuit in Madrid. The Italian won despite admitting Lando Norris "deserved to win" after the McLaren driver was undone by an ill-timed Virtual Safety Car.

Why it matters:

Antonelli continues to march toward a maiden F1 title, with nine races remaining. But the race also showed how fine the margins are at the front: Norris had the pace to win, and Ferrari again failed to capitalise on a competitive package, leaving the title fight looking increasingly one-sided.

The details:

• Norris took pole by 0.011s from Antonelli and built a comfortable lead before the VSC was deployed just as he passed the pit entry. He pitted a lap later, but the slow 7s stop under green conditions dropped him to P5. He recovered to P3.
• Lewis Hamilton started P4 and jumped Max Verstappen at the start, but a brake problem sent him through the runoff and eventually forced his retirement. Ferrari was left with Charles Leclerc, who stayed out under the VSC to lead, only to pit from first on lap 48 and finish P4 ahead of Russell.
• Verstappen finished P2 after being told to give back places for cutting the chicane while battling Hamilton. He then made the most of the VSC to limit the damage and held off Norris at the end.
• In the support races, Ugo Ugochukwu sealed the F3 title with a P2 finish, while Dino Beganovic won the F2 Feature Race. Nikola Tsolov still leads F2 by seven points heading to Baku.

What's next:

The championship continues in Baku with Antonelli holding a commanding 81-point lead. With Mercedes looking strong and Norris the only driver able to match their pace, the title race may soon be decided.
