Antonelli takes opportunistic Spanish GP win as Mercedes extends title lead

Kimi Antonelli claimed his eighth win of the season at the Spanish Grand Prix, but even he admitted luck played a part. A perfectly timed Virtual Safety Car let Mercedes make a cheap stop and leapfrog Lando Norris, who had controlled the race. George Russell finished fifth, yet Mercedes left the Madring with both championship leads extended.

Why it matters:

Mercedes has now won at Monza and Madrid without a major upgrade since Canada. With nine races in 11 weeks, including three triple-headers, the team is well placed in both title fights.

The details:

• Antonelli started P2 and challenged for the lead, but cut the apex and had to give the place back. His attempts were messy, dropping him briefly behind Verstappen before settling into second.
• The VSC changed everything. Mercedes pitted Antonelli onto the Hard tyre, putting him into the net lead, and he kept it clean to take his eighth win of the year. He admitted: "We probably didn’t deserve to win, but we will of course take it."
• Russell had contact with Piastri at the start but held P6. Pitted under the VSC despite starting on Hards, then stopped again when Mediums didn’t work, finishing fifth.
• Wolff praised the execution: "Kimi drove well and, whilst the Virtual Safety Car played into his hands, he drove well to bring the car home at a very challenging circuit."
• Russell was realistic: "No matter what we had done with strategy today we would have finished P5. The VSC came at the worst point for everyone who started on the Hard tyre."
