2026 Dutch GP driver rankings: Norris leads, Verstappen's gamble backfires

Lando Norris produced one of his strongest weekends of the season to top Edd Straw's 2026 Dutch Grand Prix driver rankings, converting pole into victory at Zandvoort despite a red flag and tricky conditions. Max Verstappen, by contrast, paid the price for a risky first-lap move and slumped to the bottom of the list after a heavy crash.

With the sprint format, rain just before the start and Zandvoort's demanding layout, this was a stern test of adaptability, consistency and mistake management — and the final Dutch GP for now did not disappoint.

• Norris was ranked first after a near-flawless weekend. His pace on the hard tyres was key to the win, and he was razor-sharp in battle. Only a slip to third in the sprint and losing the lead at the restart counted against him.
• Fernando Alonso climbed to second in the rankings despite starting 18th. He was the only driver to make a de facto one-stopper work and kept Pierre Gasly behind him in the closing stages.
• Liam Lawson impressed on his Red Bull debut, taking third in the rankings. He adapted quickly to the RB22 and was just over a tenth off Verstappen in qualifying, though a needless yellow-flag penalty cost him.

Lawson's strong stand-in showing, Alonso's recovery and Hulkenberg's superb Sunday all stood out, while Bortoleto's spin and Sainz's collision with Albon hurt their scores. Verstappen's crash was the biggest swing, turning an otherwise strong weekend into one to forget.

The driver rankings will shift again at the next round, but the Dutch GP underlined that racecraft and error avoidance matter as much as raw speed. With the midfield tighter than ever, the margins between a top-five ranking and a bottom-five one remain small.
