Document 18 - Infringement - Car 81 - Failure to slow under yellow flags

To: The Team Manager, McLaren Formula 1 Team From: The Stewards Date: 19 September 2025 Time: 18:54

Summary of Incident

The Stewards received a report from the Race Director (document 14) and subsequently heard from the driver and team representative regarding an incident during Practice 2.

  • No / Driver: 81 - Oscar Piastri
  • Competitor: McLaren Formula 1 Team
  • Time of Incident: 16:33
  • Session: Practice 2
  • Fact: The driver of Car 81 failed to slow under yellow flags at 16:33.

Infringement

Breach of Appendix H, Article 2.5.5 b) of the International Sporting Code: Failing to slow under yellow flags.

Decision

Driver: Reprimand (Driving).

This is Oscar Piastri's 1st reprimand of the season.

Reason for Decision

The Stewards reviewed various evidence including positioning/marshalling system data, video, timing, telemetry, and in-car video from Car 81 (Oscar Piastri), and heard from the driver and team representative.

  • A yellow flag was displayed at Marshal Post 1.2, and a green light was shown at light panel 3.
  • Drivers had been instructed to take action required under a yellow flag condition even if they saw a green light, regardless of whether they had seen the yellow flag itself.
  • Oscar Piastri passed Marshal Post 1.2 when the yellow flag was first shown but saw the green light at light panel 3.
  • The yellow flag was withdrawn less than one second after the green light became visible to the driver.

Although a technical breach of regulations occurred, the mitigating circumstances (the rapid withdrawal of the yellow flag after the green light appeared) led to a reduced penalty of a Reprimand. This decision aligns with previous similar incidents.

Right of Appeal

Competitors have the right to appeal certain decisions of the Stewards in accordance with Article 15 of the FIA International Sporting Code and Chapter 4 of the FIA Judicial and Disciplinary Rules.
