Stewards' Decision

Decision: No further action.

Reason for Decision

The Stewards conducted a thorough review, including:

  • Hearing from Car 30 driver (Liam Lawson) and Car 10 driver (Pierre Gasly).
  • Consulting team representatives.
  • Reviewing positioning/marshalling system data, video, telemetry, team radio, and in-car video evidence.

Incident Analysis

Car 10 (Pierre Gasly) attempted an outside pass on Car 30 (Liam Lawson) at the entry to Turn 17. Car 10 was clearly ahead prior to the apex and had established its rights under the Driving Standards Guidelines. A significant collision occurred, pushing Car 10 into the barriers, causing it to flip and become wedged in the TechPro.

Driver 30's Explanation

Liam Lawson explained that just before the collision, he experienced a technical issue: his gearbox failed under braking. The Stewards confirmed this explanation by reviewing in-car data and telemetry, which clearly showed a gearbox failure just before the incident. Radio communications also supported this finding.

Conclusion

The Stewards accepted Liam Lawson's explanation, concluding that the collision was caused by a mechanical failure of a car part, and there was nothing the driver could do to avoid it. They also determined that the driver could not have anticipated the gearbox failure.

Therefore, the Stewards found that the collision was due to a mechanical failure, not driver error, and Car 30's driver was not at fault. Consequently, no further action was taken.

Right to Appeal

Competitors have the right to appeal certain decisions of the Stewards in accordance with Article 15 of the FIA International Sporting Code and Chapter 5 of the FIA Judicial and Disciplinary Rules, within applicable time limits.
