Wolff: Antonelli title proves 'win-at-all-costs' F1 driver is dead
Kimi Antonelli became F1âs youngest world champion by finishing third at the Mexico City Grand Prix, clinching the title with four races to spare. Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff then used the moment to send a pointed message about the behaviour he wants to see in the sport.
Why it matters:
Wolff said the âwin at all costs, selfish, opportunistic, ruthlessâ model of racing driver âhas died.â Without naming anyone, he criticised the âfew entitled ones in Formula 1, the endless moaners on the radio, the ones that complain, the ones that crash.â He argued Antonelli proves humility, integrity, loyalty and respect can still win championships.
The details:
- Antonelli, in his second F1 season, has won nine races after replacing Lewis Hamilton at Mercedes in 2025.
- Wolff said the 20-year-old should be a role model for junior drivers and for established drivers who complain over radio.
- He called Antonelli a representative of âmodern Formula 1â because of his values as much as his speed.
- Wolff also recalled telling Antonelli they must work together to keep him relevant for a long career, citing Lapo Elkann on Gianni Agnelli.
Whatâs next:
Antonelliâs title is secure, but Wolffâs comments set a challenge for F1âs next generation: talent alone may not be enough. Character and conduct will matter, too.
