Who are the 10 F1 team principals in 2025?
Each of the 10 current Formula 1 teams relies on one individual to run the show day-to-day – rallying staff, hiring drivers, and facing the media.
Here's a look at the team principals for the 2025 season:
Andrea Stella - McLaren
Stella took over as McLaren team principal in 2023, succeeding Andreas Seidl. He restructured the technical department, leading McLaren to the 2024 constructors' championship, their first since 1998. Stella previously served as McLaren's racing director and has a strong background as a race engineer at Ferrari, having worked with Michael Schumacher and Kimi Raikkonen.
Fred Vasseur - Ferrari
Fred Vasseur became Ferrari's team principal for the 2023 season, replacing Mattia Binotto. Vasseur previously managed the Sauber/Alfa Romeo and Renault F1 teams. An engineer by trade, he also leads Spark Racing Technology, which builds Formula E chassis. Vasseur was instrumental in signing Lewis Hamilton for Ferrari in 2025.
Laurent Mekies - Red Bull
Laurent Mekies took over as CEO and Team Principal of Red Bull Racing in July, following Christian Horner's departure after over 20 years with the team. Oliver Mintzlaff, Red Bull's CEO of corporate projects and investments, thanked Horner for his significant contributions.
Toto Wolff - Mercedes
Toto Wolff is F1's most successful team principal, having led Mercedes to seven drivers' and eight constructors' championships between 2014 and 2021. Wolff is also an equal co-owner of the team. He transitioned into team management after a career as a racing driver and investor, becoming executive director of the Mercedes F1 team in 2013.
Andy Cowell - Aston Martin
For the 2025 F1 season, Aston Martin appointed Andy Cowell as team principal, replacing Mike Krack. Krack moved to chief trackside officer. Cowell, a key figure in Mercedes' hybrid engine success as their F1 engine chief from 2013 to 2020, joined Aston Martin as group CEO in July 2024.
Flavio Briatore - Alpine
Following the resignation of the youngest team principal, Oakes, in May 2025, Flavio Briatore has returned as Alpine's executive advisor and interim team principal. Briatore is a former Renault F1 team principal.
Ayao Komatsu - Haas
Ayao Komatsu replaced Guenther Steiner as Haas team principal in January 2024. Komatsu, who joined Haas in 2016 as head of trackside operations, has extensive F1 experience, including roles as a tyre engineer and race engineer at Renault.
Alan Permane - Racing Bulls
Alan Permane assumed the role of Team Principal for Racing Bulls following Laurent Mekies' move to Red Bull. Permane expressed his honor and looked forward to working with the team's CEO, Peter Bayer, to drive the team forward.
James Vowles - Williams
James Vowles joined Williams as team boss at the start of 2023, leaving a long career at Mercedes. Vowles, who started his F1 career in 2001 with BAR, has a strong background in strategy and was a key part of Mercedes' success during the hybrid era. He aims to lead a cultural transformation at Williams.
Jonathan Wheatley - Sauber
Jonathan Wheatley is set to depart Red Bull to become Sauber's new team principal from April 1. Sauber has been without an official team principal since Fred Vasseur's departure in 2022, with Alessandro Alunni Bravi serving as team representative. Wheatley's arrival is part of a restructuring initiated by Mattia Binotto, Audi's chief operating and technical officer.
