Piastri laments 'painful' Spanish GP after opening-lap contact costs him

Oscar Piastri has called his Spanish Grand Prix "pretty painful from Lap 1" after opening-lap contact with George Russell left him carrying front wing damage for the rest of the 57-lap race at the Madring.

The Australian could only manage eighth, his lowest race finish since the British Grand Prix in July. It was a frustrating end to a difficult weekend, with Piastri already on the back foot after a tough qualifying session before twice making contact with Russell approaching Turn 1.

Why it matters:

For McLaren, Piastri's damaged afternoon meant valuable points slipped away at a circuit where overtaking is notoriously difficult. The bigger picture: a single first-lap incident can derail an entire race, especially when qualifying leaves you vulnerable at a track with limited passing opportunities.

The details:

• Piastri started on the hard compound and was committed to a long opening stint when Lance Stroll stopped on track with brake problems on Lap 15, triggering a Virtual Safety Car.
• VSC timing hurt: McLaren kept Piastri out, a decision that didn't pay off. "The timing of the VSC was certainly not ideal for us," Piastri told F1.com. "Staying on the hard. It was just a difficult afternoon."
• He eventually made his first stop on Lap 43 as McLaren tried to undercut Liam Lawson, but Piastri rejoined in traffic and couldn't clear Franco Colapinto in the closing stages.
• Pierre Gasly's penultimate-lap stop promoted Piastri to eighth, but there was no time for further progress before the chequered flag.

Between the lines:

Piastri was clear that the opening-lap damage wasn't the only problem. "I think it was mostly down to qualifying. I think also Lap 1 obviously was far from ideal, having damage for the whole race. So yeah, it was tough like that," he said.

Rather than dwell on the result, the Australian treated the afternoon as a chance to learn more about the McLaren and his own approach behind the wheel. "I think today we just tried to learn as much as I could to get more out of the car and the way I drive it. So yeah, hopefully we've learnt a few things for the rest of the year."
