Max Verstappen Wins Emilia Romagna GP After Stunning Oscar Piastri Overtake

Max Verstappen secured his second win of the F1 season at Imola, with a crucial first-lap overtake on Oscar Piastri.

Despite a slow start, falling behind George Russell, Verstappen went around the outside of pole-sitter Piastri at Tamburello to take the lead cleanly.

The Red Bull driver quickly built a lead of about two seconds over Piastri by Lap 13, when Piastri pitted from mediums. Piastri's stop was slow, dropping him into traffic. Verstappen and Lando Norris ran long on their mediums, aiming for a one-stop strategy on a high-degradation day. Norris pitted on Lap 28 for hards.

The virtual safety car came out on Lap 29 when Esteban Ocon's Haas stopped, effectively giving Verstappen a free pit-stop and extending his lead over Norris to 19.8s. Piastri was still clearing traffic.

A full safety car was deployed on Lap 46 after Kimi Antonelli stopped. Verstappen, Norris, and Hamilton pitted for fresh tyres under the safety car, while Piastri stayed out.

On the Lap 53 restart, Verstappen pulled away for an easy win. Piastri and Norris battled for second, with Norris passing Piastri on Lap 58 at Tamburello. Piastri finished third, and Hamilton was fourth.

Russell was initially boxed in by Piastri at the start, allowing Verstappen the space to go around the outside and take the lead. Norris passed Russell for third on Lap 11.

Leclerc pitted early but got stuck behind traffic after his stop. Piastri also pitted and faced traffic, which allowed Verstappen and Norris to extend their stints.

Ocon's VSC on Lap 29, just after Norris's stop, was a major help for Verstappen, providing a large advantage. The safety car for Antonelli closed the field but Verstappen pitted for fresh tyres.

Verstappen controlled the restart and took the win. Norris overtook Piastri for second, leaving Piastri to complete the podium.

Hamilton finished fourth, his best result for Ferrari, passing Albon and Leclerc late on. Albon re-passed Leclerc on the final lap for fifth, Leclerc finished sixth, Russell seventh, and Carlos Sainz Jr. secured eighth for Williams.

The remaining points went to Isack Hadjar (ninth for Racing Bulls) and Yuki Tsunoda (tenth, from the pit-lane for Red Bull).

Fernando Alonso finished 11th, continuing his point-less streak. Aston Martin struggled after the VSC, falling back on worn tyres. Lance Stroll finished 15th.

Other finishers included Nico Hulkenberg (12th), Pierre Gasly (13th), Liam Lawson (14th), Franco Colapinto (16th on debut), Ollie Bearman (17th), and Gabriel Bortoleto (18th). Antonelli and Ocon were the only retirements.
