Max Verstappen Set for Nürburgring NLS Race Debut This Weekend
F1 champion Max Verstappen is set to make his competitive debut at the Nürburgring NLS (Nürburgring Langstrecken-Serie) this weekend, fulfilling a long-held ambition to race on the iconic Nordschleife.
Why it matters:
Verstappen has publicly expressed his desire to race on the challenging Nordschleife for years. This outing represents a significant personal milestone and an opportunity to expand his racing experience beyond Formula 1, a freedom he sought in his Red Bull contract.
The permit process:
Before racing, Verstappen must obtain a DMSB Permit Nordschleife. This involves a mandatory classroom session on Friday and passing an exam, a requirement for all NLS competitors. Former Mercedes motorsport boss Norbert Haug called this process "ridiculous" for a four-time world champion.
His racing plan:
- Starting point: Verstappen is expected to begin in a Lionspeed-entered Porsche Cayman GT4 CS to collect laps for his entry-level B Permit.
- Ultimate goal: Depending on permit progression, he aims to race the Emil Frey Racing Ferrari 296 GT3, possibly as early as Sunday.
- Support: This venture is backed by Red Bull GmbH in Austria, separate from the F1 team.
What to watch for:
Red Bull advisor Helmut Marko welcomed the venture, seeing it as a "great enthusiasm" and "important distraction for his well-being." Verstappen’s participation will provide a new benchmark against NLS regulars, unlike his previous demonstration runs. He will compete under his own name, adhering to DMSB regulations.
