Hamilton Leads Mexico City Q1 as Alonso Stops With Suspected ERS Failure
Lewis Hamilton put Ferrari on top in Q1 for the Mexico City Grand Prix, but the opening segment belonged just as much to Fernando Alonso, whose session ended parked at the side of the track with a suspected ERS failure.
Why it matters:
Ferrari's low-fuel pace at altitude has been the talking point of the build-up, and Hamilton's 1:17.341 gives it some substance. But with three drivers carrying grid penalties and both Aston Martins already out, the shape of Sunday's grid is far from settled.
The details:
- Hamilton's benchmark came with Isack Hadjar just 0.044s adrift in the Red Bull, a sign the RB22 has found something in the thinner air.
- Charles Leclerc made it two Ferraris in the top three, 0.165s off his teammate.
- Oscar Piastri and George Russell posted identical 1:17.659s, with the McLaren classified ahead.
- Gabriel Bortoleto slotted his Audi into sixth, one place clear of Lando Norris, with Nico Hulkenberg eighth in the sister car.
- Max Verstappen could only manage 10th, which becomes ninth on Sunday once his one-place drop is applied. Liam Lawson takes the same penalty.
- The dropouts: Alex Albon (17th) and Alonso (18th) joined Ryo Hirakawa, Lance Stroll, Sergio Perez and Valtteri Bottas on the sidelines.
- Alonso's exit: The Spaniard was noted for a separate general-safety matter after leaving his steering wheel in the car when he climbed out.
What's next:
Bottas starts from the back regardless after an almost complete power unit change, so his Q1 elimination costs Cadillac little. The real question is whether anyone has an answer to Ferrari over a single lap as Q2 and Q3 play out.
