Hamilton effectively concedes 2026 F1 title after latest blow

Lewis Hamilton's already fading title hopes took another hit in Spain, where a brake failure forced him out of the race on lap six. Afterwards, the seven-time champion conceded there's "no stopping" Mercedes and championship leader Kimi Antonelli this year.

• Hamilton started fourth and was battling Red Bull's Max Verstappen early on. Verstappen cut the opening chicane to get ahead, was told to give the place back, and reacted with furious radio messages. Hamilton called it "pretty good racing" and dismissed Verstappen's complaints: "Nothing to do with me."
• The brake issue surfaced before the retirement. Hamilton explained: "Braking into Turn 5, I hit the brake, the car started stopping, and then the pedal took a step and the car didn't decelerate as fast as it would normally. I ended up carrying a lot of speed in and brushed the barrier."
• The pedal briefly recovered, then went long a few corners later. Hamilton retired soon after, saying he didn't know where the problem came from.
• His gap to Antonelli, which was just 32 points after the British GP two months ago, now stands at a daunting 76 points with a third of the season left.

Hamilton already expects Mercedes to have the edge at the next round in Baku, a power-sensitive circuit. "It's long straights there, so I don't really know what to expect, but I'll give it everything," he said. "Mercedes will be very strong for me."
