Goosebumps and Glory: Kimi Antonelli Takes Maiden F1 Podium at Canadian GP
Andrea Kimi Antonelli achieved his first Formula 1 podium at the Canadian Grand Prix, finishing third at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve. The 18-year-old rookie battled with Oscar Piastri throughout the latter stages of the race, ultimately securing his spot on the podium alongside race winner George Russell and Max Verstappen.
Antonelli described the experience as "much better than what I imagined," with the crowd's reaction giving him "massive goosebumps." He reflected on the challenges of the recent triple-header and the importance of this strong result for his confidence, stating, "This was the best way to bounce back."
Despite the elation, Antonelli acknowledged the need for further development, particularly in qualifying pace. "We're on a good path. The team is doing a great job. Also, with George, he's helping me to push myself even further. There's a really good dynamic in the team," he commented.
Antonelli, who replaced Lewis Hamilton at the start of the year, took inspiration from fellow teenager Max Verstappen's early career success. "You see what Max has done over the years - especially in his rookie years - was quite astonishing. So definitely he's a model who I get inspired by," Antonelli said.
Verstappen, who himself debuted in F1 at 17, expressed no surprise at Antonelli's achievement. "For me, it's not a surprise. I knew Kimi coming up through the karting ranks - people were already saying great things. So I was keeping an eye on him," Verstappen stated. He praised Antonelli's natural speed and calm demeanor, predicting a bright future. "What's impressive is he's naturally quick. What I like is his level-headed, calm approach. Those are great qualities to have. I was never in doubt that the podium would come this year," he added. "In the coming years, for sure, we'll see a lot more of Kimi."
