Fernando Alonso Teases Diversification into Dakar and Le Mans for 2027

Fernando Alonso is stirring the pot once again. After securing his future with Aston Martin through 2027, the veteran Spaniard has hinted at "more surprises" in the coming weeks, fueling heavy speculation that he intends to expand his racing portfolio beyond the Formula 1 grid.

Why it matters:

Alonso has always been a racing polymath, driven by a desire to "find the limits of what is possible." His pursuit of diverse championships is not merely a personal challenge but a strategic brand expansion for Aston Martin. By placing their name on high-profile endurance and rally projects, the team enhances its global motorsport footprint while keeping its lead driver sharp across different disciplines.

The details:

• Dakar Rally 2027: Reports indicate Alonso is in final negotiations to compete in the 2027 Dakar with an Aston Martin-branded Prodrive car. Testing is expected to begin imminently, likely reuniting him with Marc Coma.
• Le Mans Return: A return to the 24 Hours of Le Mans in June 2027 is highly probable via the Aston Martin Valkyrie, as the schedule aligns well with the F1 calendar.
• Formula E Hurdles: While Alonso has expressed interest in the category, a full-time program is unlikely due to significant calendar clashes with F1 across several key markets in 2027.

The big picture:

This move reflects a growing trend among elite drivers to diversify their careers. Much like Max Verstappen, who continues to integrate GT competition into his schedule, Alonso is redefining what it means to be a full-time F1 driver. The goal is no longer just winning the World Championship, but achieving a legacy of versatility across the entire spectrum of motorsport.

What's next:

With negotiations reportedly in the final stages, an official announcement is expected shortly. The racing world will be watching to see how Alonso balances these grueling endurance commitments with the demands of a 24-race F1 campaign in 2027.
