Alonso Calls for Straight-Line Speed Boost After Spanish GP
Fernando Alonso has urged Aston Martin to enhance its straight-line speed, stating he had to "invent" overtakes during the Spanish Grand Prix.
Alonso secured his first points of the season, finishing ninth at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya. He executed several daring overtakes on the outside of Turn 3, leveraging superior grip.
Despite improving on his starting position, Alonso expressed disappointment with his race pace.
"I was expecting more from the race," Alonso told reporters. "I felt more competitive in qualifying than in the race. We had significant front tyre degradation, with the front left being heavily used after just seven laps."
He further elaborated on the car's limitations: "We lacked top speed on the straights; we were losing a lot. I couldn't make a single overtake using DRS."
The Overtake Strategy
Alonso revealed his overtakes were unconventional: "They were all made in Turn 3 on the outside, which is not a normal overtaking spot, but we had to invent these kinds of moves."
Addressing the Weakness
Alonso emphasized Aston Martin's ongoing struggle with straight-line speed this season, identifying it as a key area for development.
"In Imola, it was off Turn 7 where I managed three overtakes in the final laps," he recalled. "We need to resolve this situation and start overtaking on the straights with DRS, as everyone else does."
