F1 Commission Approves Shorter Races and New Time Rules for 2027

Formula 1's governing body has approved a slate of regulatory tweaks for the 2027 season, headlined by a shorter race distance and a fresh approach to time limits. The decisions came out of the third F1 Commission meeting of 2026, held September 21 at the FIA's London offices and chaired by Nikolas Tombazis and Stefano Domenicali.

The 2027 changes reflect a sport fine-tuning its framework around the new Power Unit rules introduced this season. Cutting race distance by two to three laps directly responds to tighter fuel-flow limits, while the revised time structure is designed to give fans the best possible chance of seeing a full race when disruptions hit.

The details:

• Race distance: Reduced from 305km to 290km for 2027, corresponding to two or three fewer laps, aligning with refinements to the Power Unit fuel-flow regulations.
• Time limits: A hard stop time will now cap the end of any racing activity. The current three-hour limit, which included interruptions, is removed — though the two-hour actual racing limit stays.
• Practice flexibility: Free Practice sessions can be extended more easily if interrupted.
• Gearbox homologation: Scrapped for 2027, preserving supplier development freedom following consultation with the manufacturer working group.
• 2026 updates: Minor changes to the Sporting and Financial Regulations were also agreed, alongside minor tweaks to the 2027 Technical Regulations.
